Our findings indicate that immature dendritic cells express more activation markers in calves fed milk replacer than in calves fed maternal milk, suggesting that the immature/mature dendritic cells ratio is lower. Furthermore, neonatal calves from the cow’s milk group expressed less MHC class II on the cell surface and produced more interferon-gamma compared with the milk replacer group of calves. The results also indicated that the total number of cells in the colon is greater in calves fed milk replacer. We conclude that milk replacer may provide sufficient nutritional support to neonatal calves, but it may alter the numbers and function of intestinal lymphoid cells. Further research is required to establish the safety and efficacy of milk replacer infant formula for neonatal calves.Q:
