Applications

Another type of printing that has become popular in recent years is lithography, in which a buildable design (such as a house, theater, etc.) is rendered with a UV-curable ink that can only be printed on specially treated paper.

CAD models

A CAD model is a three-dimensional representation of a building or other construction, which can be viewed on a computer screen. It can be exported to other CAD programs that are capable of displaying the files.

CAD models can also be printed using a 3D printer. If the design has complex details and can be easily printed, this can be a cost-effective alternative to the more expensive inkjet and laser printers.

As Dr. Neal Nathanson, Medical Director of the Program tells us, the odds of finding an HLA matched donor are 1 in 12 in the general population. That means that a patient living in an area where the overall population is racially diverse, has a greater chance of finding a donor. “New York City is a very ethnically diverse city,” Dr. Nathanson said, “so that gives us a unique opportunity to find those donors who are actually out there.”

The Program has been bringing together diverse ethnic groups and blood relatives. It’s been successful but even as the donor numbers are on the rise, the need for an HLA match is outstripping supply.

The Interdonor Program at Bellevue Hospital in New York, is helping expand the supply of HLA matched donors through the recruitment of ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented.

Reasons for Diversity

Dr. Neal Nathanson, Medical Director of the Program said, “I think the reasons for diversity are many, but one reason we are able to find those donors, it’s that there are HLA matched donors in a community who aren’t matched in the general population,” he
