“This is not a stance that we have taken lightly,” it added. “We have embraced the National Anthem. We understand the incredible history behind the words of the National Anthem. We understand that no one, not players, not team owners, and not anyone in the NFL, wants to stage a protest or do anything that disrespects our country or our flag.”

The NFL wants to “hear from our players on how they will respond to the President’s comments,” it added. “We also have great respect for the men and women of the military.”

The league’s statement comes a day after President Donald Trump attacked the NFL over the protest movement during a rally in Alabama on Friday, calling the protests “very disrespectful” and saying they are “done.”

“I will say to the NFL: Don’t try playing the Patriots with somebody else’s rules. You can’t do it. You can’t do it. They’ve got rules, and you’ve got to respect those rules,” he said.
