Richard C. Atkinson (born 1936) is an American engineer who is a pioneer in the use of beam theory and other types of finite element analysis to solve problems of structural design.

Atkinson’s path to engineering began in 1954 as an undergraduate engineering student at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. The school’s engineering program was transitioning from the civil engineering discipline to the engineering discipline. Atkinson enrolled in a class in solid mechanics taught by Kenneth S. Welch. In his class he had a professor who was also the director of mathematics and a professor of civil engineering. Atkinson became interested in the combination of both the mathematics of civil engineering and the mechanical engineering discipline. When he took his final exams he was the only person in his class that was an engineering student with a mathematics minor.

After graduation Atkinson was hired as a civil engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was hired as an engineer at AT&T Telephone Company in Syracuse, New York in 1961. Atkinson worked for two years at the Bell Telephone laboratory before transferring to the Boeing Company. He worked as a structural analyst and part of his duties were to help engineers design aircraft structures that are subjected to loads. During his years at Boeing he has worked on numerous projects, including the 747. Atkinson is one of the first persons to successfully use beam theory for structural design in place of the historically used theory of frames.

In 1992 Atkinson was hired as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University and he continues to work as a consultant, continuing to apply beam theory to structural engineering problems. In addition, he has taught graduate-level courses at the university.

The Richard C. Atkinson Medal, established in 2006, is awarded each year to a person who has contributed to the advancement of finite element analysis in structural engineering. The award is named after Atkinson.

I never ever use any of the other Visual studio plugins! If you still think you have too much of a setup, why don’t you try this tool to open and analyze an assembly file? This tool is very fast, you will be amazed!

I have found this simple but useful software. I have a need to open up windows DLLs when debugging issues that can not be easily resolved with older tools.
