but the godless culture youve described isnt harmful to anyone, and is also something many people really want, if everyone else wants it, its a good thing. we cant say we should try to outlaw it until you look at the actual harm it would cause and dont talk about anything else, and your attempts to do so are the sort of claims of emergency which im skeptical of. theres an argument to make about how the solution should be the first priority, but first, youd have to explicitly frame your norm as whats better rather than what i want.

f1: i don’t think there’s really any way to factor out the strength of something like that. i mean, the hunger games is the story of a dystopia so ruthlessly controlled that it’s impossible to question why someone would want to live there. if you’re living in, say, the real world, you might like another way of life, but you don’t see it as’scary’. and even if it is, that doesn’t mean that a dystopian future is the way to go. basically, the fact that you think of it as’scary’ either means that you think the things described in the story are real possibilities, and you don’t like those things, or that you’re a sentimentalist who thinks of fiction as something to be enjoyed in private but not something to be taken seriously in relation to real-life politics and economics.
the problem is, the obvious solution to that problem is to get an electoral college, since at least then the republicans would have to stay home. voting for me, then you get to go to war against whatever the conservatives want to do next, if they ever get their act together and govern or vice versa. ive never really understood why everyone seems so eager to give up the republic that they willingly contribute to the democrats being on the ballot.
wait, wut? have the conservatives tried governing? as far as im aware, they are responsible for shutting down the government in the last term, and still seem not to have a plan for what to do about the cliff problem . but besides shutting down the government, i think you could argue the conservatives have been responsible for the exact opposite, namely compromising at every turn to get what they want and lie about it. if youre going to use a canard about policy, the canard should be how the republicans have spent the last decade.
