Photoshop has evolved from Photoshop 7.0 and Photoshop Elements to Photoshop CS5 and CS6 (see Chapter 7 for the scoop on the differences). In this chapter, we show how to navigate Photoshop. We also detail how to use basic editing and manipulating tasks in Photoshop, from cropping, rotating, and adding text to converting images to black and white to using special filters and layer styles. We also show how to make selections and erase images.

Getting a Closer Look at Photoshop

Photoshop is one of the most powerful image-manipulation applications available. What makes Photoshop so useful is that it seamlessly combines image-editing features from traditional darkroom technologies with the ease of use of computer software. That makes it an ideal tool for composites that require more than one image — such as a family portrait where the parents have been digitally doctored to look younger or change appearance.

As you look at the new features, keep in mind that Photoshop CS5 and CS6 also include features of Photoshop CS4; they just look different. And keep in mind that Photoshop has several other great features that we skip over in this book — Layer Styles, Print Production, Camera Raw, and much more.

Getting familiar with your editing screens

Getting familiar with Photoshop is easier than you think. The following steps show you where to access the tools and features of Photoshop.

1. Choose Edit⇒Preferences and click the General tab.

You see the General Preferences dialog box, as shown in Figure 14-1, which lists important settings such as default colors, resolution, and a preview image.

2. To show or hide image thumbnails when you choose an image, select the Include Previews check box.

3. To change the colors of the dialog box, click the Colors drop-down list and choose a different color scheme.

Because the General Preferences dialog box can be overwhelming at first, just use the dialog box as a template to customize it. Click the Colors drop-down list and choose a color from the various color schemes that you see here. See the “Tuning up the appearance” sidebar for more help with color schemes. You can also select a custom color from the dialog box (covered in Chapter 11).

4. Choose a resolution for your image, such as 600 dpi or 300 dpi.

5. If you want to work on

The program is designed for both novice and advanced users. You can create and edit basic effects and organise images with the click of a button. You can convert an image from RGB to CMYK or vice-versa, add layer styles, use sharpening, curves, color profiles or resizing and much more.

Click File > New, then select.EPS from the Advanced Options menu and press OK. The Elements screen appears, and then you can name your file and save it.

The user interface in Photoshop Elements is simple to use and to navigate. It is designed to make adding layers and positioning the tools easy.

The.EPS file format is a Photoshop format that can be used to make slideshows, brochures, greeting cards and other designs. You cannot open.EPS files if you do not have Photoshop.

To open an.EPS file, just click the file to open it with the graphics software.

Use a computer keyboard. Learn how to manipulate elements of Photoshop Elements by clicking and dragging.

If you can work in Microsoft Word, then you should be able to work in Photoshop Elements with only minor glitches.

Use keyboard shortcuts to save time. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to your most commonly used functions.

Carlson Ansel Adams was an extraordinarily accomplished photographer, and this first biography of him is a wonderful and fascinating read. D.J. Stowe has done an excellent job of capturing the spirit and accomplishments of this tireless and creative artist. It’s not the sort of book where you look at some of the pictures Adams took and then wonder where the author found the “inspiration.” You know these well; “Moon Rising over Mono Lake” is on display in the Warren J. Winkler building, and many “Moon Rising” prints are in private collections. But that’s not the sort of book that Stowe has produced; it’s much more about how Adams thought, what he did, and how he felt about it all, and Stowe does a marvelous job of translating all of this into a readable and enjoyable biography. Well researched, well written, and well designed, this is a great addition to any library that has a photography department.

Changes in net metabolism during development of obesity and insulin resistance in rats.
The objective was to assess the changes in resting metabolic rate (RMR) and respiratory quotient (RQ) and their alterations in relation to changes in body weight (BW), body fat (BF), and circulating insulin (Ins) during development of obesity and insulin resistance in rats. Wistar rats received an atherogenic diet during 8 to 13 weeks of life. At the end of the diet, BW, BF, and fasting blood glucose increased in all animals compared to control group (C), which was trained on a standard diet. Rats of the experimental groups (E1, E2, E3) were treated with a hypercholesterolemic diet and grew as obese as animals of the C group. Insulin treatment was performed in order to reduce the insulin resistance in the groups E2 and E3, during 6 to 10 days. At the end of the experiment, the animals were killed and the following parameters were measured: BW, BF, serum triglycerides (TG), Ins, and glucose. The data showed that insulin treatment is associated to a significant decrease in the BW in both treated groups, without changes in BF. RMR was increased in obese animals, and RQ was decreased in comparison to the C group. The RMR and RQ values were higher in obese rats (E1, E2, E3) than in C animals.
