The following is a beginner’s guide to using Photoshop Elements.

New To Elements? Follow These Simple Steps to Get Started!

1. The first thing you’ll need to do before you can edit images is download Elements. Use the link below to download a free 30-day trial.

2. If you are using a Mac, open System Preferences and select App Store. In the upper right corner, click “Manage Downloads”.

3. Download the “Adobe Photoshop Elements App” from the App Store. It will be categorized as “Photoshop Elements for Mac”.

4. After downloading, launch Elements and sign into your Adobe ID.

5. Start using Elements! Visit the “Your Photos” tab, and click on the image you wish to work on.

The easiest way to use Photoshop Elements is to upload an image and then apply a series of commands to the image.

The following steps show you how to take a photo, fix exposure, color balance, brightness and contrast, and then sharpen an image.

Follow these steps to use Photoshop Elements:

1. Pick an image.

2. Select the Image tool from the tool bar.

3. Position the image over the area you wish to work on.

4. Click and drag to place your cursor over the area you want to work on.

5. You can adjust the tool in a variety of ways:

Use the double-click to zoom in on the area you want to work on.

Drag the left and right handles to adjust the photo.

Drag the top and bottom handles to adjust the area of the image.

Click and drag the left and right handles to pan around the image.

Click and drag the top and bottom handles to pan around the image.

Click and drag the handles on either side of the cursor to select the image.

You can also zoom in and out of the image via the magnifying glass icon.

6. You have now selected a section of the image. In the “Image” tab of the Elements window, click the leftmost icon on the main window bar.

7. This icon is the black square with a red arrow. This makes Elements change the active layer to the layer you selected in Step 5.

8. In the “Select” tab of the Elements window, click the icon in the upper left.

1. Press Ctrl+E (Windows) or Command+E (Mac OS) to open the Brush tool.
2. From the tool options at the bottom of the Tool Options bar, set the Source to None.
3. Adjust the size and type of brush.
4. To change the color of your brush, select a color from the color selector box.
5. Click once to paint a brush stroke on your image.
6. Click once again to remove a brush stroke.
7. With the Layer Options bar selected, click once to deselect it. Then, click the Selection tab to activate the selection. Now you can paint over the selection. Click and drag to paint over areas of the image.
8. To deselect the selection, click the Layer Options bar.
9. Repeat steps 1–8 to create a second brush stroke.
10. Change the type of brush by clicking the spatter icon. Then, change the size of the brush. Click the color selectors and choose a color.
11. Click once to paint a brush stroke. Click once again to remove a brush stroke.
12. Repeat steps 11–12 to paint a second brush stroke.

## PENCILS

Pens are another popular tool in Photoshop. They can be used for various effects, including drawing text, creating text frames and adding a retro look to photos.

The Pen tool makes it easy to create simple shapes. Simply click once where you want the tool to start. After selecting the shapes, you can drag to move the shapes or click to reselect the shape.

We’ll be creating a basic shape in the next step. Then we’ll create a larger shape in the next step.

1. Choose the Pen tool and click once where you want the Pen tool to start.
2. Click and drag to create the basic shape.
3. Reselect the shape by clicking once.
4. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T or Command+T (Mac OS) to activate the Transform tool.
5. Click once again to reselect the shape.
6. Move the shape to create a larger shape.
7. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T or Command+T (Mac OS) to activate the Transform tool.
8. Click to move and resize the shape.

Filter Search Folders

If you look for the word _Filter_ in the list of search tool options in Photoshop, the Filter Search Folders option will appear. This allows you to quickly browse through the main filter settings folders for fast access to the filters you are looking for.

You can find out more about the various filter settings available to you, and how to use them, in the following chapters.

## Using the Workspace

The workspace allows you to organize your work, either on a per-document basis or a per-image basis.

You can open or close the workspace using the Window menu and choose the Workspace menu. You also have the option of saving the workspace in a collection of your own. See the section called **Creating a collection** later in this chapter to find out how.

The following sections give you an overview of what the workspace is, and how you can customize the look and feel of the workspace.
