when the illusion is active, the target you choose is strongly affected by a static enchantment, such as a boulder or a wall. the target gains a +2 bonus to ac and a +2 bonus on saving throws. it has resistance to damage from cold, electricity, and fire. the target has disadvantage on intelligence (investigation) checks. it can’t smell or hear.
you know the basic spells. do you know illusion spells? do you know how to make illusion spells? perhaps, you know a nontraditional spellcaster. or maybe you are a wizard that knows a wizard that knows a nontraditional spellcaster.
basic illusion spells are simple to create. you can spend points to create an illusion of a creature, of a weapon, or of a noncreature object. there are some nuances, as well. for instance, a weapon can be real (as long as you have the appropriate material component, that is). you can also create a spell effect in place of a creature or a weapon. however, you can only create the illusion of one thing at a time.
the wizard class provides a basic set of illusion spells. most of these are spell-like abilities (sles) with no range, and with a cost. most of these spells are cantrips, although some are more powerful. they are rather simple, but the lack of range or a range is often a shortcoming.
ok, this one is mostly like the previous one, with the difference being you can also make illusions of yourself and friends. this is a pretty useless ability, but if you happen to fight a wizard or illusionist, and they start crying, you might get some value out of it.
this is my favorite ability, and is a real stunner. illusions have no ac. you can then enter their minds and influence them. if you try to force them to do something, they might fight you, but if you try to convince them, they might help you. this really opens up a bunch of interesting possibilities. from this ability alone, you could make a neutral character with a good attitude, and convince them to betray a rival.
the ability illusions of reality grants you a +1 on your saving throw against spells and abilities with a range of touch. thats a lot. its a good way to make sure that you are not affected by, say, a mummy, or a crossbow. if youre playing a warlock, you might want to use it to completely negate the poison of a silver spike. all of that is nice, but theres more!
illusions of reality also modifies your saving throw dcs against magic. this means that if you are using a weapon with the magical properties of the enchantment school, they will only work on you if you are taking a saving throw against them.
all you have is the illusion school. of course, this school is easy to get in, but it may not be as useful as some of the other ones. minor illusion is a cantrip, and it could have some utility. however, if your gm doesnt have the player feel for the illusion school, you may find yourself fighting the game.
this is a pretty big and powerful ability. it makes the illusion spells you cast a lot more of a focus on how to manipulate people’s perceptions. be careful not to overdo it, like i would with minor illusion, but this is a pretty powerful ability.
hex-like effects are pretty cool if you dont have to waste a reaction to dispel a 1st-level illusion with no magic items (or no sort of item). so long as the illusion is -2 to dispel with a reaction you can make it out of danger for a few rounds, allowing you to resolve the spell.
minor illusion is one of the most powerful spells in the game. it cant be countered, resisted or detected. your gm can use his imagination to make it even more powerful. for instance, he can try to throw an illusion so hard that it is clearly a monster and not a child. a monster is far more likely to get up from the floor. so the gm can use his imagination to make it a pretty powerful spell. in addition, because you can see the creature it seems as if the spell is not working. this can make it seem as if the creature is not there. the gm can use this to make it appear as if a regular, cheap, illusion spell is working. this makes it very powerful, even though it is quite easy for your gm to make a weak effect.
