* **Photoshop tutorials for beginners:** Many companies produce a variety of inexpensive digital-camera camera-tutorial books that are worth a look. ThinkProgress and Primedia both offer a variety of digital-camera books that cover how to use Photoshop, and there are so many that I can’t think of one here.

## Processing and Manipulating with Photoshop Elements

In the world of digital photography, every _point_ of interest on your camera’s sensor is represented as an image, similar to the way a pixel is the smallest point of visible light on your monitor. (In a monitor, pixels are squares; in a digital camera, a _pixel_ is a tiny dot.) When a pixel or point on the sensor is exposed, it has a color: red, green, or blue.

A _pixel_ contains color information on a _pixel plane_ —the part of the sensor that sits underneath the lens. (Don’t worry —your monitor doesn’t have any pixels that show color.)

A bit is like a switch, or a button, that determines whether the color on the pixel is on or off. Your camera’s pixels are arranged into rows and columns on the sensor, much like in the matrix shown in Figure 6-1.

## Selecting a Pixel

Your camera captures the sensor’s raw data in a format that can’t be displayed on the camera’s monitor, but it can be converted to the.TIFF file format used by Photoshop Elements. When you import a file from your camera into Elements, you see the pixels on your computer’s monitor.

The Trump Administration’s plan to restore a major shooting range to the Southern California desert could undo decades of environmental progress in the Mojave Desert and threaten rare and threatened species, according to biologists, scientists and conservation groups. The Mojave Desert is the largest single desert in North America and home to nearly 1,000 species of plants and animals. It is one of the world’s most globally significant biodiversity hotspots and is home to some of the world’s rarest species. Despite its status as a desert, the Mojave Desert’s unique geography and ecosystem are being threatened by projects that alter and destroy ecosystems and have contributed to fires, invasive species, drought and other problems. The new target range, designed to be the largest shooting range in the western United States, would be constructed in the native habitat of the rare desert tortoise and would be located in the heart of the Greater Mojave Trails Ecological Reserve, a protected area of 520,000 acres that protects important wildlife and habitat. The project would also impact rare plants and endangered species, including the desert tortoise and the desert badger. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently accepting public comment on a proposed plan to develop the range. Once completed, the new shooting range would consist of 20 firing ranges and cover approximately 1,350 acres. Firing ranges are a common component of military training, and their construction and maintenance pose serious environmental threats to western lands. If the BLM acts on the plan, it would be the largest new shooting range in the West. The agency will take public comment through January 18, 2019. California’s Mojave Desert is one of the world’s most important, yet most vulnerable, regions for species conservation and recovery. The state has held unique legal protections for the desert under the Endangered Species Act for decades. The plan also comes as the federal government awards Western states a record amount of funding to fight wildfire. In California, state and federal officials are working to cut the threat of wildfires, but they are currently looking at spending cuts in other areas, including conservation and environmental protection.

Project Summary (Abstract): Emerging evidence suggests that low levels of physical activity may be an important risk factor for the development of systemic atherosclerosis in youth, independent of other established cardiovascular risk factors. Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor, and the identification of youth at risk may lead to the development and testing of targeted intervention strategies to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis in this population. However, no clear consensus exists on the optimal screening tool for this purpose. In contrast to the guidelines developed for the risk assessment of atherosclerotic vascular disease in adults, the current practice recommendations are poorly defined, largely because of their dependence upon a single questionnaire (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children). A valid and reliable screening tool for physical inactivity in youth is required to guide screening, prevention, and intervention strategies to reduce risk of systemic atherosclerosis in this population. Measurement of physical activity intensity through accelerometry may represent a more accurate means of assessing physical activity in this population. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the incremental validity of a physical activity intensity measure as a screening tool for young adolescents at risk for coronary heart disease, compared to a widely used measure of physical activity, using cut-points currently recommended by current guidelines. A secondary objective of this study is to develop and test an accelerometry-derived measure of physical activity intensity that may be useful for developing and testing hypothesis about the effect of physical activity on chronic disease risk in this population. Youth between the ages of 12 and 16 (N=198) will be recruited from the San Francisco Bay Area in a community-based cohort. Participants will be administered a questionnaire regarding physical activity, physical fitness, and health behaviors. They will be subsequently offered enrollment in a cardiovascular risk reduction clinic. Youth will wear an accelerometer for 5 consecutive days while at home, and their resulting data will be analyzed using standard methods for the assessment of moderate-vigorous physical activity. Results will be compared to the questionnaire to assess the incremental value of using an accelerometry-derived measure of physical activity intensity as a screening tool for risk of coronary heart disease over a well-established measure of physical activity. The proposed research will provide the first evidence regarding the incremental value of a physical activity intensity measure as a screen for risk of coronary heart disease in youth. This project will also provide the first data regarding the feasibility of the physical activity intensity measure for use in future research, including in the context of a clinical setting, and an examination of the physical activity intensity measure as a mediator of change in markers
