In the world of digital photography, every _point_ of interest on your camera’s sensor is represented as an image, similar to the way a pixel is the smallest point of visible light on your monitor. (In a monitor, pixels are squares; in a digital camera, a _pixel_ is a tiny dot.) When a pixel or point on the sensor is exposed, it has a color: red, green, or blue.

Project Summary (Abstract): Emerging evidence suggests that low levels of physical activity may be an important risk factor for the development of systemic atherosclerosis in youth, independent of other established cardiovascular risk factors. Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor, and the identification of youth at risk may lead to the development and testing of targeted intervention strategies to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis in this population. However, no clear consensus exists on the optimal screening tool for this purpose. In contrast to the guidelines developed for the risk assessment of atherosclerotic vascular disease in adults, the current practice recommendations are poorly defined, largely because of their dependence upon a single questionnaire (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children). A valid and reliable screening tool for physical inactivity in youth is required to guide screening, prevention, and intervention strategies to reduce risk of systemic atherosclerosis in this population. Measurement of physical activity intensity through accelerometry may represent a more accurate means of assessing physical activity in this population. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the incremental validity of a physical activity intensity measure as a screening tool for young adolescents at risk for coronary heart disease, compared to a widely used measure of physical activity, using cut-points currently recommended by current guidelines. A secondary objective of this study is to develop and test an accelerometry-derived measure of physical activity intensity that may be useful for developing and testing hypothesis about the effect of physical activity on chronic disease risk in this population. Youth between the ages of 12 and 16 (N=198) will be recruited from the San Francisco Bay Area in a community-based cohort. Participants will be administered a questionnaire regarding physical activity, physical fitness, and health behaviors. They will be subsequently offered enrollment in a cardiovascular risk reduction clinic. Youth will wear an accelerometer for 5 consecutive days while at home, and their resulting data will be analyzed using standard methods for the assessment of moderate-vigorous physical activity.
