Why doesn’t elementaryOS’s RootfsMount enable MTP support when devices are plugged in?
I am running elementaryOS 0.3.1 on an ASUS UX305CA with an Intel Atom Processor D2700, 2GB RAM.
When plugging in an Android (or non-Linux) device via MTP and using RootfsMount to automatically mount the device, the device can be accessed as normal via Root. However, when the device is plugged in via USB and the MTP media player enabled, RootfsMount does not enable the device and instead says “Failed to start Android MediaTransfer Protocol client.”. What is causing this behaviour?
After a quick look at the source code, it seems that the problem is caused by the bus-host_init function as it handles the USB hub being used to connect the USB host device to the Windows host system. The USB bus host device is not found in this case, and the media transfer protocol thus fails to start.
It would be possible to fix this issue by changing the way the USB hub is detected and enabled, but the solution would also bring in a lot of other issues that might occur due to the fact that USB hubs can be found in many different configurations and pinouts, and at least with the USB hub I tried, the signal levels were not stable.
An alternative solution would be to modify the same function that MTP uses to check whether a USB host device is connected and enabled, and instead of doing a USB host device or USB hub check, just check for a USB connected device connected via a USB hub. From what I can see, it is a simple matter of looking at the mass storage ID of the device, and this can be done without the need to change the way the hub is detected and enabled.
A code snippet with the modified function can be found below. The full source code can be found in Git.
Function internal_mass_storage_init(bus, dev, adev, media_dev, source_fd, mode, uuid,
notify_id, report_desc, supported, &found)
