Possible bug with sync’ing an NFS client’s orphan dir

I have an NFS share which contains a directory I’ve just created with mkdir. I did so on the server. Later, I manually mounted the share on my client.
When I do an ls -Rl on the client, all of the contents of the dir are listed (in fact, there are no entries in it). Here’s the NFS share’s exports file:
/path/to/share/dir /var/local/somedir
users 192.168.1.17(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

When I use an NFS client to connect to the server, it works flawlessly. However, when I attempt to mount the share, I end up with an empty directory. It’s empty, in other words, not because another process has overwritten the contents. When I do an ls -Rl on the client, it shows that nothing has been added to this directory. When I do an ls -Rl on the server, it still shows the directory as having contents.
How can I get my client to properly sync the orphaned directory?

If the server exports the directory with local_lock then the NFS client will always show the directory as empty. The server needs to export the directory with local_unlock or the nfs server will refuse to export the directory.
A work around is to prevent the mount point from locking files before export, by turning off the no_locks option in the exports file. This causes client processes to not have exclusive lock on the directory. The server can then still do its own locking and atomicity (or whatever) and the clients won’t have trouble with it.
