what is it? perhaps the best question to ask yourself before diving into a world where actual pinballs seem like a distant memory. the closest most people will come to playing a pinball game is playing arcade it 3 . not exactly the pinball game you’re imagining. as a matter of fact, the name should be changed to vizpin: pinball + virtual arcade . it’s a mobile pinball title that attempts to replicate the feel of a pinball machine with a touch-screen interface and some handy, but not game-changing, features.
despite dongqi’s legacy in the arcade pinball world, this never-released title has slowly been disappearing from the arcade market, resulting in a rapidly-dwindling number of titles available to play in the united states. and, honestly, why should it? while there’s very little reason to argue against the cross-playability of a mobile device with any gaming platform, when you go one step further and have a platform that is designed to replicate the experience of a pinball game, it simply doesn’t make sense for the ios/android space to highlight a pinball game from a company that has already got the “pinball” part down.
zen pinball 2 (or zen pinball 2 if you’re a blackberry user). they’re famous for being addictive and enjoy a huge following with their titles like zen pinball 2 , zen pinball trilogy and zen pinball 3 .
the challenge with a true virtualization is that you want the user to believe they are dealing with a real machine and for that to happen the player has to feel the details. virtual realism is about so much more than just a few things looking and moving like a real machine. we are striving to use what i call “pinball physics” which covers a lot of area from tactile feedback, to the physics of the objects you can push around, to the physics of how the ball moves and rolls, to the physics of the lights, sound and action from the game. it’s complex and it has been a lot of work. even though the vpin does not have a realistic “friction” system (really a fancy name for “i rolled my ball on the flipper and that feels good so i hope you can use it more often” ), a lot of the game elements have been upgraded to the point where if you ran a vpin in a real game that would be indistinguishable. it’s up to you to decide what is most important to you. good luck!
i have played a real pinball machine many times. i know there is a difference. i have played the ultra vp and everything from classic to the latest zen studios pinball fx tables. i will try the vpx again to compare.
i was very skeptical when i saw that there is no bumpers, when i have a backglass monitor that is not a real concern because the playfield stays put. i am sure that the design is pretty nice. but i have to ask.. i have never played pinball, but if the playfield changes position how will i know what hit the playfield, all the backglass does is have a tiny window that looks at the playfield. isn’t there a way of having bumpers on the backglass?
i am currently working on a 4th grader’s birthday party and i want it to be something he will remember for a long time. as it stands, i bought him a pinball setup with the play station 3, a playfield, and 2 backglass monitors. i wanted to get him something different this time, but i am a little stuck as to what he wants. i am thinking of getting him the visual pinball, but i am not sure what to get him. i know that it is still early, but i was wondering if anyone else had a suggestion or two. thanks!
i love the eye-candy! everything looks amazing! i wish the visuals were more realistic though. i also wish the flippers had some kind of shake for when you throw the ball. on some of the different modes, you can see some shaking. i love it! i want to see the flippers shake on all the modes!
i am a long time fan of pinball who has played many machines in the past. my favorite, however, is visual pinball. the visuals are the best i have ever seen. the look and feel of the flippers and bumper makes me want to play. even if i didn’t enjoy pinball, visual pinball is probably one of the best games you could play!
